HERMOSA — Two cousins have been charged with armed robbery after their alleged victim used his stolen smartphone’s GPS to track one of them to a Wicker Park store.
The two men allegedly approached the 18-year-old man about 11:30 p.m. Friday as he was walking home in the 2100 block of North Cicero Avenue, according to a news release from Police News Affairs. One of them pointed a gun at him while the other rummaged through his pockets and took his phone, wallet and cash.
The two then fled on foot.
The victim flagged down police and reported the crime that night, according to Shakespeare District Lt. Michael Mulkerin. Two days later he was able to use the phone's GPS to track it down to a store in the 1700 block of West North Avenue.
There, he identified 25-year-old Dion Rutledge, of the 1100 block of North Harding Avenue, as one of the men who had robbed him, police said.
Rutledge allegedly pulled a semiautomatic handgun from his waistband as officers arrived to arrest him, but they quickly subdued him, according to the release. He was charged with armed robbery, weapons possession, resisting arrest and possession of marijuana, police said.
A subsequent investigation led to the arrest of Rutledge’s cousin, 30-year-old Delshun Rutledge, of the 2100 block of North Mango Avenue, who was charged with armed robbery, the release said.
The Rutledges were scheduled to appear in bond court Monday.
