UPTOWN — Commuters were greeted Monday morning by a bright, shiny new Argyle CTA station, after more than a month of renovations were completed.

"[The old station] was not very welcoming," said Rachel Johnson, an Uptown resident commuting to work. "This station seems a lot safer. We noticed the new cameras, new lights. It's nice."

The updates were part of a citywide initiative, nicknamed "Red Ahead," that includes maintenance work on seven north Red Line stations.

The project's $86 million budget comes from a $1 billion Red Line Capital Investment Initiative announced in November 2011, jointly sponsored by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Gov. Pat Quinn.

Station improvements at the seven Red Line sites include platform repairs, cosmetic fixes to the exterior, lighting improvements and station waterproofing, according to the CTA.

The Argyle station, which opened in 1908 and was rebuilt most recently in 1921, was closed from Friday, Aug. 24 to Friday, Oct. 5, during which time commuters were rerouted to neighboring Berwyn and Lawrence stations or to various bus lines.

A significant addition to the new station is a hinged door turnstile alternative that will accommodate strollers and wheelchairs more easily.
