PILSEN — A Pilsen elementary school will soon be getting a new playground and sports field, city officials have announced.

The City Council approved funds for a new playground and 10,000-square-foot artificial turf field at Perez Elementary School, 1241 W. 19th St. in Pilsen. The $800,000 project will be funded by tax increment financing dollars.

As part of the project, new basketball hoops will also be installed at the school and a basketball court will be resurfaced.

Existing playground equipment at the site will be removed.

The Pilsen TIF funds will cover the entire cost of the project.

Perez Elementary, a CPS fine and performing arts magnet school, is named for World War II hero and Medal of Honor winner Manuel Perez Jr.
