MOUNT GREENWOOD — Chicago police are warning neighborhood businesses after an armed robber struck a convenience store in the Gold Coast early Saturday and another nearly 20 miles away in Mount Greenwood 19 hours later.

The alert issued Wednesday said that a black man between 20-35 years old and about 5-feet-6 and 175 pounds was armed with a black handgun at the time of the robberies. Police said the robber wore a black winter hat and a black coat.

The first robbery occurred at 5:30 a.m. Saturday at a store in the first block of East Chicago Avenue in the Gold Coast, according to police.

The second robbery occurred at 1:30 a.m. Sunday in the 3100 block of West 111th Street in Mount Greenwood, police said.

A clerk at the 7-Eleven store on the northeast corner of 111th Street and Kedzie Avenue said Wednesday the robber walked up to the cashier with a gun and demanded cash. While the police alert only gave a description of one robber, the clerk said another man held the door during the crime, and the pair fled with about $300, she said.

"We have them on camera, but I don't think [store employees] know them," she said.

Detectives  are investigating the robberies. Anyone with any information is asked to call 312-747-8384 or 312-747-8273.
