CHICAGO — An 83-year-old man died early Saturday morning after a Ravenswood Manor house fire that may have occurred because the man was smoking while on oxygen, officials said.

Firefighters were called to the 2900 block of West Giddings Street at 12:40 a.m. Saturday and found the man in the basement of the single-family home, according to police and fire officials.

He was taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital where he died.

No one else was injured.

Police said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but fire officials have noted the man was smoking while he was on oxygen.

Firefighters will return to the neighborhood at 10 a.m. Saturday to distribute smoke detectors.
