BRIDGEPORT — A masked man walked into the neighborhood's Family Dollar early Wednesday and robbed the discount store, according to Chicago police.

At 10:16 a.m., a robber wearing a black mask and black hoodie walked into the store at 3431 S. Halsted St., told the cashier behind the counter he had gun and demanded money from the register, police said.

He got away with an unknown amount of cash, police said.

No one was hurt, and detectives are investigating, police said.

The popular Halsted store remained open the rest of the day.

Police said the same robber also hit the Subway in the 3900 block of South Archer Avenue at 10:52 a.m. Wednesday.

He is described as a 20- to 30-year old black man, between 5-foot-10 and 6-foot-2, weighing 160 to 180 pounds, police said. He had a black afro and wore a black hooded sweatshirt, black jeans with a design on the rear right pocket and red gloves with the fingertips cut off.

Several other businesses, including the Bridgeport Bakery, have been robbed in Bridgeport in the last month, police said. The other robberies occurred:

• At 7:10 p.m. Jan. 12 in the 1000 block of West 31st Street

• At 5:05 a.m. Jan. 19 in the 2900 block of South Archer Avenue

• At 4:09 p.m. Jan. 19 in the 1300 block of West 31st Street

• At 5:15 p.m. Jan. 26 in the 3200 block of South Racine Avenue

In those cases the robbers were described as one to three black men ages 17 to 25, standing between 5-foot-5 and 6-foot-3, weighing between 140 and 160 pounds and wearing dark clothing, police said.

Chicago police did not comment on whether the Family Dollar and Subway robberies were connected to the others in the neighborhood.
