Girl, 5, Accidentally Shoots Herself In Garfield Park, Police Say

CHICAGO — A 5-year-old girl accidentally shot herself in Garfield Park on Tuesday night, police said.

At 8:05 p.m., the girl was inside a home in the 3700 block of West Ferdinand Street when she accidentally shot herself in her abdomen with a handgun, police said.

The girl was taken to Rush Hospital by her family and transferred to Stroger Hospital, where she was in serious condition, police said.

The girl's mother Larrinita Starks, 22, was charged with a misdemeanor following the shooting and was released on bond, police said.

The child found the gun in her mother's purse inside a bedroom of the home, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Starks is schedule to appear in court at 555 W. Harrison St. on March 16, police said.
