COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A West Lawn woman was arrested at Midway International Airport this week for bringing a loaded gun through a TSA checkpoint.

Madeline Martinez, 18, told authorities she didn't realize she'd been toting a real gun — she thought it was a BB gun, Assistant State's Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said during a bond hearing this week.

TSA agents spotted the 9mm handgun, loaded with five bullets, as it passed through an X-ray machine at a security checkpoint about 11 a.m. Monday, prosecutors said.

Martinez, of the 6000 block of South Knox Avenue, was hoping to board a Southwest Airlines flight to Las Vegas, court records show. According to an arrest report, she does not have an firearm owner's identification card or concealed-carry license.

Martinez is charged with attempting to board an aircraft with a weapon.

Cook County Judge James Brown on Tuesday set bail at $25,000.

Martinez has no prior criminal record.
