JEFFERSON PARK — The sounds of the season will ring from a medley of trumpets, violins and guitars at the Copernicus Center this Friday, as the "Merry-achi Christmas Concert" brings a new style to holiday classics.

The Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez will play selected music from the Nutcracker ballet and "other long-time Christmas favorites," according to the event announcement.

Mariachi Sol de Mexico has toured the world, serenading audiences with the distinctly-Mexican music style since Hernandez founded the group in 1981.

Friday's performance was organized by the Mariachi Institute of Chicago, a conservatory whose mission is to teach the art form to students between the ages of 8 and 16.

The show starts at the Copernicus Center, 5216 W. Lawrence Ave., at 7 p.m. Tickets range between $40 and $75 and can be purchased on the theater's website.
