HYDE PARK — If it’s a weekday in September, the Museum of Science and Industry is free for Illinois residents.
Starting Tuesday, the museum, 5700 S. Lake Shore Drive, started offering free admission to visitors who can show proof of Illinois residency on weekdays through Sept. 30.
The museum is back to its fall hours, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., but that still leaves plenty of time for visitors to check out the U-505 submarine, the mirror maze and tons of historic planes, trains and cars.
Special exhibits like the “Brick by Brick” Lego exhibit and tours of the submarine and coal mine still require an extra timed ticket and are not included in general admission.
This is one of the best opportunities to get into the museum for free with only six free days left in the year after September.
The other free days at the museum for 2016 are Oct. 2-6, Nov. 3, Nov. 10 and Dec. 1.
