MOUNT GREENWOOD — Saint Xavier University's football team was ranked No. 10 in a 2016 NAIA Football Coaches' Preseason Top 25 Poll released this week.
The Cougars open the season at 5 p.m. Aug. 27 at St. Vincent Health Field in Indianapolis against defending national champion Marian University. The No. 1-ranked Knights have appeared in the national title game in three of the last four seasons.
Meanwhile, Saint Xavier finished the last year with a record of 7-4. The Cougars also appeared in the NAIA Football Championship Series but fell to then-No. 1 seeded Morningside College. The final score of 75-69 capped a game that featured four overtimes.
"I'd like to think we're deserving of being in the Top 10, and I know the No. 1 team [Marian] is very deserving. I guess we'll find out where we stand in a few weeks," Saint Xavier's football coach Mike Feminis said.
