COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A Cook County Jail inmate awaiting trial for rape and kidnapping has been charged with raping his cellmate.

Gerrod Greer, 27, is accused of making sexual advances toward his 27-year-old cellmate while the men were alone together in Division 6 housing, 2801 S. Sacramento Ave., on April 29 and April 30.

The cellmate rebuffed Greer, and the men went to sleep, Assistant State's Attorney Liam Reardon said during a bond hearing Tuesday.

But Greer later woke up his cellmate, who was sleeping on the bottom bunk, and threatened to beat the man if he didn't perform a sex act, prosecutors said. The cellmate complied, and Greer then raped the man, according to Reardon.

When Greer and his cellmate were allowed to leave their cell the following morning, the cellmate reported the attack to a sheriff's deputy, prosecutors noted.

Both men were taken to a nearby hospital, where rape kits were collected. Officials would later determine that Greer's DNA matched DNA collected from the cellmate's rape kit.

Prosecutors this week charged Greer with criminal sexual assault. Cook County Judge Laura Sullivan on Tuesday set bail at $500,000.

Greer is currently in custody awaiting trial for a 2015 case in which he is charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery by strangulation, unlawful restraint and aggravated criminal sexual abuse. The case is being heard in suburban Markham, and details were not immediately available.

According to Cara Smith, chief policy officer for Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, Greer is currently being housed by himself in a facility outside of Cook County pending trial.

Smith said rape kits were collected immediately after Greer's cellmate reported the attack on April 30, and results came back last week. Prosecutors wanted DNA evidence before pursuing charges, Smith said.

Cook County Jail has "zero tolerance policy" for rape, according to the sheriff's office website: "It is also our policy to provide victims of sexual abuse with the same services victims of sexual abuse would have access to in the community, unless a specific security reason dictates otherwise."
