CHICAGO — An 18-year-old shot and killed a man in front of his family in Englewood, prosecutors said.

Camron Howard has been charged with murder and aggravated battery in the incident.

On Thursday night, the victim of the shooting was on his grandmother's porch in the 6400 block of South Damen Avenue, sitting with several family members when Howard walked up and began to talk to the victim, who he knew, prosecutors said.

Howard asked the victim a question and the victim stood and took out his cellphone. At that point, Howard took out a gun, said, "You know what time it is," and shot at the victim, prosecutors said.

The victim, a 29-year-old man, was hit five times, including in his head, and was killed. A 38-year-old man who was sitting on the porch was also hit in his leg.

Howard ran away but was caught less than one minute later by officers who had been patrolling the area and heard the gunshots. The relatives of the slain man identified Howard as the shooter and there are three witnesses to the incident, prosecutors said.

Howard has a history of juvenile weapons and burglary charges, prosecutors added.

Judge Laura Sullivan ordered Howard held without bail. His next court date is Monday.
