CHICAGO — When you pick up a bag of Skittles in Chicago after this week, you can take comfort in knowing they may be made locally — REALLY locally.

Skittles candy will expand its production to Yorkville starting Tuesday. Produced by Chicago-based Wrigley candy company, Skittles were previously produced only in Waco, Texas. But the new suburban Chicago factory will open with a ribbon-cutting Tuesday.

The $50 million expansion in Yorkville comes with 145,000 square feet of space and 75 new jobs.

“Mars has a long-standing history of making our products in the markets where they’re sold,” said Wrigley Americas President Casey Keller. “With the expansion of our Skittles production footprint, we are proud to continue that tradition right here in the state that Wrigley has called home for 125 years.”

In addition to Skittles, the Yorkville factory will also produce Life Savers, and Doublemint and Juicy Fruit gum.
