COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A suburban man has been charged with masturbating in front of a stranger in a Wal-Mart parking lot on the Northwest Side.

It wouldn't be the first time Douglas Sale, 42, has been caught with his pants down in public.

According to authorities, the Oak Park man previously was convicted of masturbating on the CTA Brown Line on three occasions. He's also got a Wisconsin conviction for "lewd and lascivious behavior," which requires him to register as a sex offender in Illinois.

"I don't know, Mr. Sale, what we need to do to get your attention, for you to get some help for yourself," Cook County Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. said during a bond hearing Tuesday.

"Maybe a few days in county jail will stop you," the judge said before setting bail at $250,000.

According to prosecutors, a 27-year-old woman was sitting inside a car in the Wal-Mart parking lot at 4626 W. Diversey Ave. when Sale drove up next to her about 2 p.m. on April 28.

The woman's boyfriend had just run into a store, prosecutors said, and she was waiting for him to return.

That's when Sale allegedly pulled down his pants, grabbed some lotion and began masturbating inside his car, Assistant State's Attorney Erin Antonietti said in court Tuesday.

The woman called her boyfriend, who rushed outside with store security, prosecutors said. Sale drove off — but not before the 27-year-old woman got his license plate number.

Sale was arrested inside his west suburban Oak Park home about 11:55 a.m. Monday, court records show. He is charged with public indecency and lewd exposure.

According to his public defender, Sale works as a self-employed computer programmer.
