CHICAGO — Runners seeking a spot in this year's Bank of America Chicago Marathon will need to apply by Tuesday.

The marathon considers two categories of applications: guaranteed entry and non-guaranteed entry. Runners thinking they qualify for guaranteed entry could apply as early as March 8, and those who qualify for non-guaranteed entry could apply as of March 15.

Applications for both guaranteed and non-guaranteed positions are due by 2 p.m. Tuesday, according to a news release from marathon organizers.

Applications can be submitted at chicagomarathon.com.

Runners can qualify for guaranteed entry if they:

• Finished the race five or more times within the last 10 years

• Finished the race with a sub 3-hour-and-15-minute time (for men) and a 3-hour-45-minute time (for women) since Jan. 1, 2014

• Are participating with an official marathon charity

• Were deferred from the 2015 race

Everyone else will have to apply for a non-guaranteed spot. Those applicants will be selected randomly and runners will be notified of their selection by April 21.

Participation in the race costs $185 for United States residents and $210 for international residents.

The 2016 marathon — in its 39th year — will be held Oct. 9.
