ASHBURN — Darius Fleming, a Super Bowl champion with the 2015 New England Patriots, returned to his alma mater Friday to present his former coach with a special football.

St. Rita High School's head football coach Todd Kuska was the recipient of a commemorative 50th anniversary Super Bowl football — a gift from the former Mustang standout who also played outside linebacker at the University of Notre Dame.

Each high school that produced a player or coach with a Super Bowl under his belt received such a football, according the officials with the high school at 7740 S. Western Ave. in Ashburn.

Fleming, a 2008 graduate of St. Rita, made headlines during the 2016 NFL playoffs after it was revealed that he helped rescue a woman involved in a car crash. Fleming received 22 stitches in his right leg after kicking in the vehicle's window to help the woman involved in a three-vehicle accident on Jan. 14.

The incident happened without fanfare near Gillette Stadium and just two days before the team’s playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Fleming went on to play 10 snaps in the game that ended with a 27-20 win for the Patriots.

"Darius is a great football player and athlete, but he is an even better person," Kuska said.
