NORTH MAYFAIR — Meetings of the North Mayfair Improvement Association are typically civilized affairs but at Wednesday's gathering, things are going to get wild.
Guest speaker Jeff Skrentny, an avid birder, will talk about the restoration work underway at LaBagh Woods, a 160-acre forest preserve situated between Bryn Mawr and Foster avenues.
In 2015, Skrentny spent 1,000 hours at LaBagh, documenting its transformation and all the wildlife that call the woods home. He founded the Facebook group "My Year Birding at LaBagh Woods," which recorded more than 157 bird species, 16 different mammals, two snake species, three turtle and frog species, more than 20 butterfly species and dozens of plants.
In a previous interview with DNAinfo Chicago, Skretny said that it's amazing "discovering new life or breeding life at LaBagh, a place many probably write off as a trash piece of forest ... and showing others around the place and watching the wonder in their eyes when they see what an incredible forest this is, right in the city, so full of life."
At Wednesday's meeting, Skrentny will give a quick history lesson on LaBagh and offer ways that neighbors can help reinvigorate the woods as a healthy, vibrant wild space.
Join the North Mayfair Improvement Association at 6:45 p.m., at the Gompers Park fieldhouse, 4222 W. Foster Ave.
Bring along an orange or grapefruit peel — Skrentny will also lead a session in making natural birdfeeders.
