PILSEN — Local college-bound students applying for financial aid for the first time can get some free help from experts on Saturday in Pilsen.

Leaders at the La Casa Student Housing & Resource Center are hosting a hands-on FAFSA completion workshop from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the center, 1815 S. Paulina St.

Students attending should bring a copy of their family's most recent tax forms.

The workshop aims to help local students navigate the financial aid process, said María Bucio, director of La Casa.

“Some students are also the first ones in their family applying to college and in some cases the parents of these youth can’t help them figure out the paperwork because they haven’t gone through the process or there are language issues," she said. "It then becomes the responsibility of the student to try to figure out the nuts and bolts of financial aid and that can seem like a daunting task.”

Saturday's workshop is part of La Casa's College Talks, a series of free financial health workshops for college students and college-bound youth.
