CHICAGO — Mayor Rahm Emanuel plans to introduce an ordinance Tuesday that will raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco products from 18 to 21, according to the mayor's press office.
The tobacco products include cigarettes, e-cigarettes and smokeless tobacco.
Other cities that have made the age change include New York, Boston, Cleveland, Kansas City and Evanston, according to the mayor's office.
"This step is designed to help prevent young people from becoming addicted to nicotine at an early age — in fact, research shows that four out of five smokers start the habit before the age of 21," according to a news release.
