HYDE PARK — It’s a been a mix of emotions for Hyde Park ice skaters over the past week as the Midway Plaisance rink has closed and re-opened, only to close again through the weekend.

Early on Friday the rink at 1130 Midway Plaisance North was closed after a problem with the chiller that keeps the ice cold, according to Jessica Maxey-Faulkner, a spokeswoman for the Chicago Park District. Staff at the rink said that the chiller rods broke.

By that afternoon, the chiller was fixed and the rink was scheduled to re-open, Faulkner said.

But those plans were quickly called off and the rink closed again later that afternoon when the weather took a turn and rain caused the ice to deteriorate.

On Saturday, staff at the rink said with the rain damage and the chiller unable to keep existing ice at freezing temperatures, the entire sheet of ice will need to be rebuilt over the weekend.

The rink is scheduled to reopen on Monday, according to rink staff.
