WEST RIDGE — The family behind Lincoln Square's popular Garcia's Restaurant is opening a new Mexican restaurant at the spot of the former Swiss Pastries bakery, 7511 N. Western Ave.

Roxanne Garcia, manager at the family owned and operated 4760 N. Lincoln Ave. location, said the son of the original Garcia's, Oscar, will take over the bakery to create another restaurant owners hope will be open by spring.

Garcia said family members are excited to spread their wings into a new neighborhood where they hope to attract new customers, as well as serve their many loyal regulars.

In mid-December, permits were issued for the West Ridge location to begin a $64,900 interior build-out of the two-story mixed-use building. The building was bought by Domenico and Jacqueline Calderone, also members of the Garcia family, in 1988 and once housed the Swiss bakery, for which a sign still currently hangs.

Garcia said her brother is just getting started on the work, but they hope to open in the spring.
