CHICAGO — Two teens have been charged in a string of North Side armed robberies after a police chase early Wednesday, police said.
Detectives were "conducting a covert mission," monitoring armed robberies and a carjacking that had occurred on the North Side, said Officer Jose Estrada, Chicago Police spokesman. Police spotted a white Jeep that had been used in the robberies on the Kennedy Expy. near Ohio Street about 12:15 a.m.
Police tried to stop the car in the 4900 block of South Prairie Avenue and a chase began. Two men ran out of the car and were caught in the 5600 block of South Calumet Avenue, Estrada said. Two guns were found.
One 17-year-old, from Bronzeville, and another 17-year-old, from Woodlawn, were arrested and charged. Police would not release their names.
They are charged with eight counts of aggravated robbery (which occurred in the Albany Park, Town Hall and Foster police districts) and one count of aggravated possession of a stolen vehicle.
There were eight robberies involving multiple robbers in just 12 hours last week on the North Side, police said.
They will appear in bond court Thursday. The investigation is ongoing, police said.
