Cabbies, Other Ride Service Drivers Being Robbed in Austin, Police Say

CHICAGO — Cabbies and drivers for other transportation services have been warned to be on the lookout in Austin after a series of robberies in the area, police said.

At least three drivers have been robbed in the neighborhood since Saturday, police said in a community alert. The robbers take cellphones, wallets and other property from the drivers, police said. In one case, the robber had a knife, police said.

The robberies occurred at 7:55 p.m. Saturday in the 300 block of South Kilbourn Avenue, 11:10 p.m. Saturday in the 300 block of North Karlov Avenue and 7:40 p.m. Sunday in the 300 block of North Cicero Avenue, according to police.

Police have said there could be as many as three robbers. One is described as a black man about 20-years-old, standing between 5-foot-8 and 6 foot and weighing 160 pounds, police said.

Another robber is described as a black man age 25-30 weighing between 260-300 pounds and standing about 6-feet-2, police said.

The third robber is described as a black man age 20-25 years, standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 180 pounds.

Police have asked anyone with information on the robberies to call detectives at 312-744-8263.
