5 Killed, 13 Wounded in Weekend Gun Violence

CHICAGO — Citywide gun violence left five men dead and another 13 people hurt over the weekend, police said.

Police found a man shot to death in a gangway in Englewood Sunday night, according to Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police spokesman.

• Most recently, a man was shot in his apartment in South Shore early Monday morning, police said.

Around 3:30 a.m. Monday, police responded to a call of a person shot in the 7500 block of South South Shore Drive, Estrada said. There they found the man, 47, in his apartment with a gunshot wound in his ear.

The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition, Estrada said.

The man said he did not know how he was shot, Estrada said. 

• About 8:40 p.m. Sunday, two men were walking out of a store in the 6700 block of South Western Avenue in Chicago Lawn when someone walked up and shot at them, Estrada said.

One of the men, 49, was taken to Holy Cross Hospital with a gunshot wound in his back, Estrada said.

The other man, 32, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center with a gunshot wound in his groin, Estrada said.

Both men were listed in good condition, Estrada said.

• Around 6:30 p.m., a 26-year-old man was walking in the 7300 block of South Luella Avenue in South Shore when two men wearing hoodies walked up and shot at him, Estrada said.

The man was taken to Jackson Park Hospital, Estrada said, where he was listed in good condition after being treated for a gunshot wound in his leg.

• Around the same time, Estrada said, a 23-year-old man was shot in his leg in the 1300 block of North Mayfield Avenue in Austin.

The man was taken to West Suburban Hospital, where he was listed in good condition, Estrada said.

Police said the man is a documented gang member, and he is not cooperating with authorities.

• At 3:50 p.m. Sunday, a 25-year-old man was sitting in a car in the 9200 block of South Halsted Street in Washington Heights when a group of men walked up and shot at him, Estrada said.

The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was listed in good condition with a gunshot wound in his upper-left chest, Estrada said.

Police said the man is a documented gang member.

Three men died and five people were hurt following citywide shootings between Saturday morning and Sunday morning, police said.

Before that, police said, a man was killed and two others were wounded — including a 14-year-old boy — between Friday and Saturday.
