BACK OF THE YARDS — A man was killed and a woman was hurt in a shooting in Back of the Yards early Sunday morning, police said.

Around 12:20 a.m., the man, 27, and the woman, 32, were sitting in a parked sedan in the 5300 block of South Union Avenue when a man exited a dark-colored car and shot at them, according to Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police spokesman.

The man tried to drive away and crashed into a fire hydrant in the 2700 block of West Garfield Boulevard, Estrada said. He had been shot in the left side of his body, and paramedics later pronounced him dead, Estrada said.

The woman was brought to Stroger Hospital, where her condition stabilized after she was treated for a gunshot wound in her left hip, Estrada said. Police could not say what condition she was in.

Police said the man was a documented gang member.

Relatives told the Chicago Sun-Times that the man was a Minneapolis resident who had come to Chicago to visit family for Thanksgiving.
