CHICAGO — An 8-year-old boy shot his 10-year-old brother in what police are calling an accidental shooting in Washington Heights early Thursday.

The 10-year-old was shot in his side around 9 a.m. inside a home in the 9000 block of South Bishop Street, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

Family members drove the boy to Little Company of Mary Hospital, where hospital officials called police about 10 a.m. Thursday, Estrada said.

The boy was transferred to Advocate Christ Medical Center in "guarded condition," Estrada said. He did not have an update on the boy's condition Friday morning.

The shooting appears to be accidental, Estrada said, though an investigation is ongoing.
