CHICAGO — A 33-year-old man was killed in a West Garfield Park shooting early Thursday, according to police.

The man was in the 4400 block of West Monroe Street around 10:35 a.m. Thursday when shots rang out, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police spokesman. Witnesses saw five or six men running from the scene, and saw the shooting victim run to a nearby building before he collapsed on the stairs, Estrada said.

The victim, identified as Lee Fields, was struck in his torso, according to Estrada and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Fields, who lives on the block where he was shot, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after 11 a.m., authorities said.

Police said Fields is a documented gang member. An investigation is ongoing, Estrada said.
