COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A man charged with murder in the killing of a 14-year-old boy was allegedly aiming for rival gang members, prosecutors said at a bond hearing Friday.

Marcus McCarty, 14, was walking with several people in the 1100 block of North LeClaire Avenue in Austin on Aug. 24, 2014, when he was fatally shot in his abdomen and back about 2:50 p.m., Assistant State's Attorney Robert Kline said during the bond hearing.

Authorities have identified Michael Anderson, 18, as the alleged shooter.

According to Kline, Anderson got out of a car, walked toward Marcus' group and opened fire. Several witnesses identified Anderson as the shooter and said they saw him run back to the car before fleeing.

Anderson later told someone he shot at the group of people because he believed they were rival gang members, according to authorities.

Anderson admitted to police that he and several others discussed shooting at rival gang members that day, and that he was present during the shooting. He did not admit to being the shooter.

Anderson, of the 3100 block of West Madison Street in East Garfield Park, was convicted earlier this year of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in an unrelated case. He was sentenced to 15 months in state prison with a projected parole date of Dec. 24, 2015, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Past juvenile convictions include possession of a controlled substance, possession of a stolen motor vehicle and attempted aggravated robbery, prosecutors said.

Cook County Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil on Friday ordered Anderson held without bail.
