COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A Grand Crossing man has been charged with murdering 25-year-old Wesley Kelly in August.

Laparis Coffee, 20, was carrying a gun with an extended clip when he opened fire in the 6600 block of South Michigan Avenue on Aug. 27, Assistant State's Attorney Kim Przekota said during a bond hearing this week.

Coffee fired 19 rounds, fatally striking Kelly in his head, prosecutors said.

Kelly, of the 6200 block of South Evans Avenue, was pronounced dead at 6:06 p.m. on Aug. 28, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

After the shooting, Coffee ran and hid in an acquaintance's nearby home, Przekota said. Two witnesses were able to identify Coffee as the shooter, and he was arrested Monday afternoon, court records show.

Coffee, of the 7300 block of South Rhodes Avenue, is charged with first-degree murder.

Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas on Wednesday ordered Coffee held without bail.
