NORTH PARK — U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera will visit North Park University this week to discuss the role of the artist in society.

On Thursday, Herrera will read from his works, sign books and field questions at 7 p.m., in Isaacson Chapel (Nyvall Hall, click here for campus map).

Friday at 10:30 a.m. he'll deliver a lecture on "Truth-Telling and the role of the Artist in Society" in Anderson Chapel. Both events are free and open to the public.

Herrera was named poet laureate in June and is the first Latino to hold the title. Born and raised in California as the son of migrant farm workers, Herrera's work frequently tackles topics of social injustice and his activism focuses on immigrants and indigenous peoples.

His appearance at North Park University, 3225 W. Foster Ave., is part of the school's annual campus theme series. This year's theme is "What is truth?"
