DOWNTOWN — Chicago Public Schools gathered by the hundreds to protest the state's lack of budget during a sit-in Friday night.

The students made their stand at the Thompson Center, where they marched, rallied and staged a "study-in." They criticized Gov. Bruce Rauner and the General Assembly for being unable to reach an agreement on the state's budget, which has been in limbo for months.

"Without the cooperation of the state government, Chicago Public Schools are in danger of losing 5,000 employees, cutting popular classes that are not required for graduation and drastically increasing the size of classes that remain," according to a news release issued by Darcy Palder, who helped organize the rally.

On Oct. 30, CPS said 5,000 teachers would be cut if there wasn't a state budget by November. The Chicago Teachers Union has told its members to start saving money for what could be a "protracted strike" in the wake of "uncertainty in Springfield."
