COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE —  A man accused of ditching his car after a drunk driving crash hit the wrong person: an off-duty sheriff's deputy.

Prosecutors said Noe Garcia, 24, crashed his 2002 Nissan Sentra into a stopped car at a red light near the 2900 block of North Damen Avenue about 6 a.m. Sunday. The car belonged to the deputy on his way to work.

Cook County sheriff's deputies were able to arrest Garcia when they spotted him running along Damen Avenue in Pilsen, according to an arrest report. They had been responding to their fellow deputy's 911 call about the crash.

A blood sample at a nearby hospital revealed Garcia's BAC to be .21, while a urine sample listed the BAC as .272, court records show. The legal limit is .08.

Garcia, who does not have a driver's license, was charged with aggravated DUI, reckless driving, DUI, driving without a license, driving without insurance, leaving the scene of an accident and failing to reduce speed.

Garcia's prior convictions include aggravated DUI and driving without a license.

His public defender said Garcia, of the 2800 block of North Central Avenue, works as a mechanic and lives with his wife and 3-month-old daughter.

Cook County Judge James Brown on Monday ordered Garcia held in lieu of $40,000 bail.
