CHICAGO — A man was shot and killed after trying to rob a Gage Park store Saturday night, according to police.

The man, believed to be in his 40s, had attempted to rob a store in the 2700 block of West 51st Street around 7 p.m. Saturday, according to Officer Janel Sedevic, Chicago Police spokeswoman.

He pointed a gun at a store clerk before being shot inside the business, Sedevic said. First responders pronounced the man dead on the scene, Sedevic said.

A customer inside the business at the time of the armed robbery shot the robber, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The man was legally carrying a firearm, the Tribune reported. Police would not verify that the man was shot by a store patron.

An investigation remains ongoing, Sedevic said.
