COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — Prosecutors have charged an Austin teen with murdering Deangelo Birge in Garfield Park earlier this month.
Birge, 24, was sitting in a car in the 4300 block of West Maypole Avenue with three other people when Devion Kimble, 17, walked up to the group about 3:15 p.m. on Oct. 6, according to prosecutors.
Kimble pointed a gun at the driver's side rear window, next to where Birge was seated, and fired at least nine shots into the car, prosecutors said Thursday during a bond hearing.
No possible motive was offered.
Kimble ran away, and multiple witnesses were later able to identify him as the shooter, authorities said. The Austin resident also told a witness about the shooting a few days after it occurred, prosecutors alleged.
Birge, of the 4200 block of West Jackson Boulevard, was pronounced dead at 8:46 p.m. at Stroger Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
A second victim, a 24-year-old man who seated in the backseat of the car next to Birge, was shot in his head and hand, but survived, prosecutors said.
Kimble, of the 900 block of North Waller Avenue, was charged as an adult with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery by discharging a firearm and aggravated assault by discharging a firearm.
Cook County Judge Donald Panarese Jr. on Thursday ordered Kimble held without bail.
According to prosecutors, Kimble has a pending juvenile case for unlawful use of a weapon. Kimble is awaiting sentencing in that case.
