CHICAGO — Police have launched a homicide investigation after finding a woman who'd been stabbed to death inside a burning house in Washington Park early Monday, according to Chicago Police.

Officers rushed to the scene of a burning building in the 5100 block of South Michigan Avenue around 2:50 a.m. Monday, said Officer Janel Sedevic, Chicago Police spokeswoman.

They went into the first floor of the building where the fire was believed to have started and found a woman in her 80s who'd been stabbed multiple times, Sedevic said.

The woman was taken to University of Chicago Hospital where she was pronounced dead, Sedevic said.

A man, whose age was not immediately known, was also found inside the residence and was treated for smoke inhalation, Sedevic said.

Detectives are now treating the case as a homicide as well as an arson, Sedevic said.
