CHICAGO — In an effort to turn Millennium Park into a proper winter wonderland, the city is moving its massive Christmas tree from Daley Plaza this year — but first it needs to find the perfect tree.

After 48 years in Daley Plaza, the city's Christmas tree will move to Millennium Park this season. The tree lighting will take place Nov. 24 near the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Washington Street, the city said.

While the move may seem jarring to folks who grew up seeing it in the plaza, the Christmas tree is actually returning closer to its original home. The city housed its official holiday tree in Grant Park for 52 years, starting in 1913.

It remained in Grant Park until 1966, when it was moved to Daley Plaza. The tree has remained in Daley Plaza for every year but one: in 1982 the tree was moved to State Street and Wacker Drive.

City officials are moving the tree to Millenium Park so that it can be at the epicenter of the city's new "winter wonderland," said Michael T. Boone, commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.

The park already has a popular ice skating rink and also hosts caroling near the Bean. So it made sense to put the city's official Christmas tree near much of its holiday programming, Boone said in a statement.

Santa Claus is also scheduled to make appearances at Millennium Park through the holiday season, according to the city.

Before the festivities begin, however, the city needs to find a perfect tree to show off. The tree must be 55 feet or taller and be located within a 100-mile radius from the Loop, the city said. It should also be a spruce or fir tree, as pines are not sturdy enough.

The owner of the chosen tree will get to "flip the switch" at the lighting ceremony, the city said.
