CHICAGO — Police are investigating bones found in the Garfield Park neighborhood.
The bones, a right and left femur, had decomposed tissue and were found with adult clothing at 450 N. Kilbourn Ave., said Cook County Medical Examiner's Office spokeswoman Becky Schlikerman in a statement.
"The two bones appear to be from a human and are too large to belong to a child; however, these preliminary results will be confirmed with an anthropology consult within the next two weeks," Schlikerman said.
If the bones are determined to be from a human, they will be tested for DNA, which could take several months, Schlikerman said. The cause and manner of death are pending.
Police found the bones about 5:30 p.m. Monday in the 400 block of North Kilbourn Avenue, said Officer Jose Estrada, Chicago Police spokesman. They were found in a wooded area on the block that is "quite some distance" from Garfield and Humboldt parks, Estrada said.
