ARMOUR SQUARE — At a recent town hall meeting, a neighborhood woman asked Ald. Patrick D. Thompson (11th) how he plans to vote on Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s 2016, which includes a $600 million property tax hike.

“How will I vote on this? I haven’t made up my mind,” Thompson said. “There’s a lot of issues on here.”

Emanuel’s proposed property tax hike is $544 million — to be phased in over four years, starting with $318 million this year — combined with a $45 million Chicago Public Schools tax levy.

That means neighborhood folks with homes worth $250,000 would eventually pay an extra $588 a year.

Though Thompson’s on the fence about how he’ll vote at the end of the month, he said he believes the tax hike would ultimately make the community better.

“If we do move forward with the tax, it’s gonna right the ship,” Thompson said. “It’s not the final answer either, but it’s gonna right the ship and put us on better footing on a road to recovery and keep our community safe and strong.”
