LINCOLN SQUARE — It's been 25 years since West Germany and East Germany, separated at the end of World War II, became one unified nation.

DANK Haus is commemorating the anniversary with "The Path to German Unification," a traveling exhibit that traces the events leading up to a reunited Germany in 1990.

"The Path to German Unification" consists of 20 panels, with QR codes that connect to additional audio-visual material. Historic milestones depicted in the exhibit include images of car queues at legally opened border crossings and the emblem of East Germany (the German Democratic Republic) being removed from city hall.

Themes covered by the exhibit include the political negotiations surrounding reunification, which involved not only East and West Germany but also the United States, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and France.

The huge economic and social upheavals that accompanied reunification are explored as well.

According to a survey conducted by Deutsche Welle, the vast majority of Germans polled consider reunification an overall success, but two thirds of those who responded said the process was still incomplete.

The free exhibit runs through Oct. 26 at DANK Haus, second floor, 4740 N. Western Ave. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
