ROGERS PARK — Two recent attacks on taxi drivers just hours apart on the Far North Side have police warning cabbies in the community to stay watchful at night.

In an alert sent to the community, police said in both cases taxi drivers who had parked for the night and were walking home (or to another destination) were attacked and beaten. The assailants then robbed the victims, police said.

Both incidences occurred in the early hours of Oct. 2.

In one case, a taxi driver was approached in the 2300 block of West Morse Avenue in West Ridge around 1:55 a.m. Police described the offenders in that confrontation as two black men with dreadlocks, both wearing hooded sweatshirts.

Just a few hours later at 3:10 a.m., another cab driver was assaulted in the 1500 block of West Arthur Avenue in Rogers Park.

That victim described the people who beat and robbed him as two 27-year-old black men, both about 6-foot-5 and 170 pounds.

One of the offenders wore dreadlock-style hair, had a medium complexion and was wearing a black and white jacket with gray jogging pants, police said.

The other man also had black hair and was wearing a head bandana, white jogging jacket and gray jogging pants.

Police are encouraging residents to try to park in well-lit areas and to report any suspicious activity to 911 right away. If confronted, stay calm and try to remember any identifying markers, like tattoos or scars, of the offender, police said.
