EDGEWATER — Ever wondered what it would be like to run five kilometers though a cemetery as the spirit of hot dog king Oscar Mayer looked on?
For the fourth year in a row, you have the chance to do just that — or at least run by his grave.
The Rosehill Cemetery 5K takes participants through the city's largest Victorian-era graveyard, at 5800 N. Ravenswood Ave., on Saturday.
Starting at 7 p.m. runners will head down smooth paths that wind past many well-known Chicagoans' graves at the cemetery, as part of an effort to raise funds for the American Diabetes Association.
The race is entirely lit by candles and a DJ is on hand at the race's start and finish lines.
The race comes in three options:
• Competitive: Advance registration for the 5K competitive, timed run is $35 — or $40 on site.
• Family: Registration for the 5K fun run and walk is $30 in advance ($35 on site).
• Walker/Spectator: Non-runners, walkers and spectators may pay a $5 fee to watch as participants go about the race.
After the race, runners and attendees are invited to head over to Fireside Restaurant, 5739 N. Ravenswood Ave., for a post-race celebration.
Medals will be awarded there, and participants can get a free beer or pop.
While registering for the race, participants can also opt to pay an extra $10 for a discounted meal at Fireside.
Rosehill Cemetery was built in 1864 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
