AUBURN GRESHAM — A 19-year-old man was shot to death in Auburn Gresham on Sept. 13, police said.

At 6:53 p.m., the man was standing in the 8400 block of South Loomis Boulevard when someone jumped out of a nearby car and shot at him before getting back in and driving off, according to Officer Hector Alfaro, a Chicago Police spokesman.

The man was brought to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition with a gunshot wound in his back, Alfaro said. He was later pronounced dead.

The man was identified as Akim Gaddis, of the 8400 block of South Muskegon Avenue, in Cook County Medical Examiner's records. Gaddis died at 7:47 p.m., according to the records.

Gaddis' best friend, Deionte Harris, was shot and killed on Sunday just several blocks from where Gaddis was fatally shot.

Harris and Gaddis had been best friends since they were children, Harris' family said on Monday. They played basketball together, and Gaddis had earned a scholarship to play at college, said Autumn Dawson, Harris' younger sister.

"We all grew up together from diapers to now," Dawson said.

Gaddis' and Harris' deaths, among other violence, has left Dawson afraid of going outside. Her great-aunt, Karen Thomas, said the area is plagued by a gang war.

Just over two hours after Gaddis' death, another man was shot dead about a half mile away, police said.

No one is in custody, Alfaro said.
