CHICAGO — It might not be "traffic Armageddon," but lane closures planned for the Eisenhower Expy. this weekend still could cause major headaches for area commuters.

The Eisenhower will have lane closures in each direction this weekend while crews work on the Halsted Street bridge over the expressway, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced Friday.

Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, the eastbound left lane of the Eisenhower will be closed from Racine Avenue to Halsted, IDOT said. This closure will last until 7 a.m. Sunday.

From 1-7 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, the two left eastbound lanes will be closed, IDOT said. There will be detour routes posted during those times.

As for westbound traffic, the left lane will be closed from the interchange with the Dan Ryan/Kennedy expressways to Halsted, IDOT said. This closure will last from 11 p.m. Friday to 2 p.m. Sunday.

The closures will likely be repeated next weekend, depending on the weather, IDOT said.

The work is part of the massive Jane Byrne Interchange overhaul that closed much of the Eisenhower, Kennedy and Dan Ryan during weekends in August, the traffic Armageddon that caused major congestion on downtown expressways.

Dubbed one of the worst bottlenecks in the country, the interchange is undergoing an overhaul that is expected to relieve congestion and cost taxpayers about $420 million, according to IDOT. The interchange is used by about 400,000 drivers each day.
