UNIVERSITY VILLAGE — A Bar Louie bar and restaurant will soon open at Halsted and Maxwell near the UIC campus, owners confirmed.

The space, at 1325 S. Halsted St., was previously occupied by Morgan's on Maxwell for more than a decade. The popular bar was closed in October due to unpaid taxes.

Owners hope to open the Bar Louie franchise in November, said Feroz Fazal, managing member of Windy City Restaurant Management LLC, the group that will operate the Bar Louie location.

This is the first Bar Louie the partners plan to open, but owners involved in the deal also operate a number of Chicago area Subways under the Fazal Development Network name. The group operates two Subways on the UIC campus, he said.

"We decided to go fast casual, and the hottest fast casual is Bar Louie," Fazal said.

Windy City Restaurant Management applied for a liquor license on July 28. City officials have not yet approved the license, Fazal said.

Bar Louie rents space in a building owned by the University of Illinois at Chicago. UIC officials did not answer questions on the lease Monday.

Existing Bar Louie bar/restaurants are located in the South Loop, River North and Hyde Park.

State records show Morgan's on Maxwell's liquor license and tax registration certificate were revoked in July 2014 by the Illinois Liquor Control Commission after owners failed to pay owed retailer occupation taxes, according to state spokesman Terry Horstman.
