Thief Rummaging Through Unlocked Cars in Beverly and Morgan Park: Police

By Howard Ludwig | August 31, 2015 2:42pm

BEVERLY — The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert after a series of thefts from unlocked vehicles in Beverly and Morgan Park.

Police in the Morgan Park district said someone acting alone or with a group has been checking for unlocked car doors in the 9200-11000 south blocks between Oakley Avenue and Longwood Drive.

The thefts all occur between 2-4 a.m. as the robbers pull on the door handles of parked vehicles. Once an unlocked vehicle is found, the robbers enter and steal items from within, police said.

Eight unlocked vehicles have been burglarized in this fashion this month, according to police.

One victim reported observing a black male about 6 feet tall and with his hair in dreadlocks rummaging inside her car, according to police.

The alert recommends residents always lock their vehicles and keep anything of value out of sight, including portable GPS units, cell phone chargers, purses, briefcases and loose change.

Police also recommend parking in a secure garage or well-lit area.

Residents are further encouraged to call 911 and provide a detailed description of any suspicious people, including any vehicle and license plate information.
