HYDE PARK — The author of a new biography of Saul Bellow will be in Hyde Park Tuesday to talk about a trove of documents previously unavailable.
Zachary Leader was lucky to have 150 boxes of notes, letters and early drafts while writing “The Life of Saul Bellow: To Fame and Fortune, 1915-1964.”
Leader will be at the Seminary Cooperative Bookstore, 5751 S. Woodlawn Ave., at 6 p.m. Tuesday to talk about the treasure trove of documents on the famed Hyde Park author.
The documents were released by Bellow’s estate in 2006 and added 150 boxes of material to the University of Chicago’s Bellow Archive that were unavailable to the three previous authors of Bellow biographies.
The material adds new dimension to Bellow’s relationships with authors Ralph Ellison, John Berryman, Philip Roth and Lionel Trilling, as well as his fraught personal life.
The period includes Bellow’s time in New York City, his time in the Works Progress Administration Writer’s Project in Chicago, his education at the University of Chicago and his eventual return to the university in 1962 as a professor.
The event is free and open to the public.
