Man Using Hammer to Break Into, Rob Northwest Side Restaurants: Police

CHICAGO — Police are warning of a man using a hammer to break into restaurants and burglarize them in Portage Park and Forest Glen.

In two instances, a man has used a hammer to shatter glass in a restaurant's front door to get in, according to a Chicago Police business alert. The man took a cash register during the second burglary; during the first burglary, the man saw the restaurant's cash register was empty and he did not take anything, according to police.

The incidents occurred:

• 2:38 a.m. Aug. 18 in the 3500 block of North Cicero Avenue

• Between 10:30 p.m. and 6 a.m. Aug. 20 in the 6000 block of North Cicero Avenue

The man, who was seen on video in one case, is described as a white Hispanic 20- to 30-year-old who is 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-9, weigh 175-200 pounds and has short black hair, according to police.
