WEST ENGLEWOOD — Mayor Rahm Emanuel made it clear Tuesday that he thinks the 2016 presidential race will be a historic one.

"Hillary Clinton will be the nominee, and Hillary Clinton will be the president of the United States," Emanuel said at a news conference to tout new express bus lines on Ashland and Western avenues.

"She laid out a very comprehensive agenda as it relates to affordability and higher education," Emanuel said. He called that "a big issue about middle-class families" and said he believed no other candidate had taken a similar stand on the issue.

"Ideas matter in politics," he added, quoting an old piece of advice from President Bill Clinton.

Emanuel has endorsed the former U.S. senator and secretary of state all along in next year's election, but the prediction of her victory could also be seen as a swipe at her Democratic opponent U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).

Sanders campaigned for Cook County Commissioner Jesus "Chuy" Garcia (D-Chicago) in his unsuccessful bid to unseat Mayor Emanuel earlier this year.
