CHICAGO — Weekend warriors honing their volleyball skills this summer now have a chance to play against the pros.

The Association of Volleyball Professional (AVP) will host an open single-elimination tournament Thursday, Aug. 27 at North Avenue Beach, with up to four teams per gender eligible to enter that weekend's three-day AVP Chicago Open at nearby Oak Street Beach.

The latter tournament will feature Olympians Todd Rogers and Nicole Branagh, as well as other professional beach volleyball players. The tournament final will be nationally broadcast on NBC at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 30.

“We know beach volleyball is deeply rooted in the shores of Lake Michigan, and we’re looking forward to bringing the tour back ‘home’ to Oak Street Beach," Donald Sun AVP managing partner, said in a statement.

The deadline to register for the open tournament is 8 p.m. Thursday. The cost to register is $100 per athlete, plus a $15 AVP membership.

The tournament marks the first time the AVP tour has visited Chicago since 2009. Visit the event website for more information.
